AutoHunter docket features cars coming from long-term ownership

There are people who buy vehicles just to flip them — they hope — at a profit, and then there are those who have owned their car or truck for many years and finally have come to the realization that it’s time for someone else to take a turn.

This week we’re featuring six vehicles from the AutoHunter docket that are being offered from relatively long-term ownership, in one case by the same family since the vehicle was brand new in 1988.

1988 Ford Bronco1988 Ford Bronco

This 1988 Ford Bronco XLT was purchased in California brand new and has been owned by the same family ever since. It also has been covered when parked and is listed as “mostly original.”

It has a 5.0-liter V8 engine linked to a 5-speed automatic transmission and 2-speed transfer case. It also has power windows and locks, air conditioning (which needs recharging), AM/FM/cassette audio, cruise control and tilt steering wheel.

Mileage is reported to be 126,000 (the odometer has rolled over once), and the vehicle is reported to be accident free throughout its history.

The color is light tan, the interior is tan and brown with woodgrain accents, and the rear section of the top can be removed.

In the category of mostly original, changes since purchase include installing aftermarket diamond-plate running boards. It also appears to have an aftermarket wind blocker at the front edge of the hood.

Note as well that the Bronco is riding on 18-year-old tires.

1940 Ford Deluxe convertible1940 Ford Deluxe convertible

This 1940 Ford Deluxe convertible has been part of the same family since 1972, purchased nearly 50 years ago by the seller’s father. Since a restoration several years ago, the car has been garage-kept and upgraded with period-correct speed equipment, including Offenhauser heads, twin single-barrel carburetors and upgraded ignition. The engine is linked to a 3-speed, column-shifted manual transmission.

As a Deluxe model, the car has a 2-tone dashboard in maroon and tan, with broad seating surfaces.

1991 Chevrolet Silverado1991 Chevrolet Silverado

The seller of this 1991 Chevy Silverado pickup truck reports that the previous owner had the truck for 25 years and it has been stored indoors during winter months since the late 1990s.

The pickup has a color-matched cap over its bed, rides on 5-spoke American Racing wheels, and has power windows and locks, a Pioneer stereo with CD player, a Sun tachometer and a bench seat in the rear of its extended cap setup.

The truck has its factory-installed 5.7-liter V8 engine, rated at 190 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, and linked to an automatic transmission and 4-wheel-drive powertrain with 2-speed transfer case.

The seller notes that the transmission has been rebuilt, the air conditioning components and catalytic converter have been removed, and that minor damage resulted from an incident in 1994.

The odometer shows 117,000 miles.

The seller adds that tires and rear shocks will need to be replaced.

1978 Jeep CJ-51978 Jeep CJ-5

The consignor has owned this Jeep since January, 1981, and has restored it twice, first in 1999 and then in 2015. Since that second redo, the Jeep has been driven less than 500 miles.

This CJ5 has fiberglass body panels from a 1995 Wrangler wearing a 2013-correct Crush orange paint and carries features from various CJ, YJ and modern Wranglers. The fender flares are from a 2006 model and the rear bumper came from a 1986 Suzuki Samurai.

The 15-inch Ion wheels wear 33-inch BFG All-Terrain T/A tires.

The engine is a 258cid AMC inline 6 with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor and Hedman headers. Transmission is via a 3-speed manual with a T-handle shifter.

The Jeep has an aftermarket audio system and during its second restoration, received a factory air/climate control system.

1967 Pontiac Firebird1967 Pontiac Firebird

The consignor has had this Firebird for eight years and in 2019 completed its restoration and customization. The car retains its factory 326cid V8 engine and 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. The seller says the original mileage is 65,200, only 50 of them since June 2020, when the car got new 5-spoke wheels and tires.

The paint is Lamborghini Orange with black stripes on the hood and black spoilers front and rear. The color scheme extends to the interior.

1970 Dodge Challenger 1970 Dodge Challenger

Owned by the seller for seven years is this 1970 Dodge Challenger, which the seller says has been garage stored and received regular maintenance.

The car looks nice in dark burnt orange with a black vinyl top, the body color reapplied a decade ago by the previous owner (there is a scratch on the bottom edge of the passenger door, the seller notes).

Power is provided by a 318cid V8 linked to an automatic transmission. The coupe has power brakes and steering and an aftermarket audio system.

There’s much more to see on AutoHunter, the online collector car auction website driven by ClassicCars.com, and we merely focused today on cars we found with long-term or relatively long-term ownership histories.

Andy’s favorite classic cars lined up on AutoHunter’s auction docket

Monterey car week is just about upon us, and I have the pleasure of picking a few cars from the AutoHunter auction website likely to sell for significantly less than most of the cars at Monterey and are all excellent examples of collector car vehicles.

So, if you are not able to attend Monterey or if a car out there is a bit out of your reach financially, as they are for me as well, consider one of these gems from the online auction site driven by ClassicCars.com.

1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

autohunter, Andy’s favorite classic cars lined up on AutoHunter’s auction docket, ClassicCars.com Journalautohunter, Andy’s favorite classic cars lined up on AutoHunter’s auction docket, ClassicCars.com Journal

I have loved this era of Trans Am since Smokey and the Bandit came out and this specific car seems to have everything I like except for the T-tops.

It has been repainted, but it was of high quality and is in the iconic black of the movies. It also had many service items added, including a completely rebuilt suspension, new fuel system, including the tank, and a new exhaust system.

This car displays 55,000 miles on its odometer and would be a great car to take to local shows and more importantly on the Bandit Run rally.

1970 Plymouth Barracuda

autohunter, Andy’s favorite classic cars lined up on AutoHunter’s auction docket, ClassicCars.com Journalautohunter, Andy’s favorite classic cars lined up on AutoHunter’s auction docket, ClassicCars.com Journal

The Cuda is one of the most iconic cars of the 1970s and this car, finished in Plum Crazy, with a 340cid V8 and a 4-speed manual gearbox ticks all the boxes for me.

The car has extensive service records and, while not a show-level car, it would be the perfect driver-level car you could still take to local shows.

If you want a Cuda to drive and enjoy, this is the one.

1971 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

autohunter, Andy’s favorite classic cars lined up on AutoHunter’s auction docket, ClassicCars.com Journalautohunter, Andy’s favorite classic cars lined up on AutoHunter’s auction docket, ClassicCars.com Journal

This is my very favorite year C3 Corvette and in my very favorite shade of yellow.

It includes both a soft and a hardtop and, best of all, is a numbers-matching big-block LS5 454cid equipped car. It also has all the options I’d want, including a tilt-tele steering wheel, power steering, 4-speed manual gearbox, power windows and A/C that is said to work as it should.

These C3 cars are the best value classic 1970s sports cars on the planet and this one for me is just about perfect.

1978 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe

autohunter, Andy’s favorite classic cars lined up on AutoHunter’s auction docket, ClassicCars.com Journalautohunter, Andy’s favorite classic cars lined up on AutoHunter’s auction docket, ClassicCars.com Journal

Yes, this is a weird one but let me explain. My grandma had one of these cars new and I still remember riding in it and thinking of how nice it was as a luxury car.

I can’t remember the last time I saw one of these Lincoln Town Coupes in a condition as nice as this one. The exterior paint looks to be in excellent condition as does the grey cloth interior. More surprising is that the ½ vinyl top looks to be in great shape.

No, this car will never likely be worth $100,000 but an example this nice would be welcome at AACA events around the country and you are likely to have the only one in attendance.

Andy selects his favorite classic cars on AutoHunter

It’s my turn to choose the cars I love from the current offerings on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, and it seems as if the AutoHunter team curated the docket just for me.

I would say that 70 percent of this week’s listings fit my taste, but I decided to limit myself to the four cars I would most want to bid on and have in my garage.

I hope you like my selection but if you disagree with them, let me know why and we can discuss it in the comment section below.

1964 Volkswagen Beetle convertible

AutoHunter, Andy selects his favorite classic cars on AutoHunter, ClassicCars.com JournalAutoHunter, Andy selects his favorite classic cars on AutoHunter, ClassicCars.com Journal

I simply love classic VW Beetles, and the convertible top on these cars is good enough to rival the best from Mercedes cars of the era.

They are fun to drive, extremely well built (again, think Mercedes build quality), and inexpensive to run with parts easy to find. These cars are also the easiest car to service yourself than probably any other imported car due to the existence of the How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive service manual.

They quietly climb in price every year and are a hit at any car show you will attend. The fact that this car was owned by the same person for the last 40 years, looks as nice as it does and features an engine upgraded to a 2-liter makes it all the more attractive.

1971 Datsun 240Z

AutoHunter, Andy selects his favorite classic cars on AutoHunter, ClassicCars.com JournalAutoHunter, Andy selects his favorite classic cars on AutoHunter, ClassicCars.com Journal

The 240Z is the car that permanently changed the affordable sports car market. Datsun built a car that not only virtually annihilated the small-bore British, Italian, and German sports car market, but also was direct competition with the likes of Porsche and Jaguar for a fraction of the price.

These cars are quite hot right now. It pays to buy a truly good example rather than a bad one and have to pay more to restore it.

This specific car is finished in my very favorite color of New Sight Orange and looks to have received excellent care, including a partial restoration in 2001. It looks like one you can buy, drive, show, and enjoy for years to come.

1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS

AutoHunter, Andy selects his favorite classic cars on AutoHunter, ClassicCars.com JournalAutoHunter, Andy selects his favorite classic cars on AutoHunter, ClassicCars.com Journal

The 1968 Camaro is my favorite year for the first-generation models and being someone who loves to drive cars more than talk about their originality, this specific example would have a nice place in my garage with the LS2 engine under the hood, a T56 6-speed manual transmission and Wilwood brakes.

The fact the dash and interior were left alone and the iconic Camaro gauge cluster has not been replaced with a modern setup only adds to the cool factor of this car.

1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302

AutoHunter, Andy selects his favorite classic cars on AutoHunter, ClassicCars.com JournalAutoHunter, Andy selects his favorite classic cars on AutoHunter, ClassicCars.com Journal

Of all the many classic Mustangs built from 1964½ to 1973, the Boss 302 has always been my favorite model.

I initially liked them as to me they were at least, if not more, special than a 1968-1970 Shelby car but were much more affordable and have a better racing pedigree being homologation cars.

This specific Boss 302 is extremely well documented with a Marti Report as well as its original build sheet, both quite important when buying a rare Mustang. I would park this in my garage in a second and take it to Monterey next month as my way to get from event to event.

AutoHunter Spotlight: 1948 Ford F1 custom

Ford’s first pickup in what we now call Ford’s F-Series was the F1, launched in 1948, and AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, has one up for auction.

This 1948 Ford F1 pickup is powered by 350cid V8 that’s been upgraded with a Cragar supercharger, an MSD ignition system, aluminum radiator and additional Edelbrock performance parts. Power is sent to the rear through a 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic 350 transmission.

The body is finished in a shade of Porsche Guard’s Red paint and features a 6 ½-foot step side bed lined with hardwood planks and stainless-steel hardware.

Inside the cab is a tan bench seat with matching steering and lap belts. The door panels, dash and instrument panel are color-matched to the body.

This Ford F1’s auction ends June 3 at 11:40 a.m. PDT.

Long-term ownership comes with these AutoHunter offerings

I’ve always been a sucker for the idea of vehicles, especially collector vehicles, being handed down through the generations of the same family, typically father to son or daughter, or perhaps a nephew or niece, and then to that person’s son or daughter.

One reason I’m attracted to such vehicles is that they are likely to have been well-maintained by the family or, if parked for a few years, the ensuing generation has worked to restore the vehicle to the way Grandpa drove it.

This week, for my turn to peruse ClassicCars.com‘s AutoHunter online auction site, I’ve found two multi-generation family cars, and a vehicle that’s being offered after 47 years of original-buyer ownership.

Here they are:

Unfortunately, we’re not told much about this car’s story, except that it has been in the possession of the same family since it was new. It’s a two-door hardtop from the second-year of the second-generation of the non-letter series of Chrysler’s famed 300 model and is powered by a 325-horsepower, 383cid V8 linked to a 3-speed automatic gearbox.

While parts have been replaced in the past dozen years, the selling family notes things that need to be done.

The car appears to be in survivor condition and looks good in the photos, which include those of its blemishes. The exterior is black and the interior red. Interestingly, there’s no cutout in the dash for a radio. Pity we aren’t told more about the car’s history.

This Fox-body Mustang was acquired two years ago by the son-in-law of the original owner, and it has been driven nearly 120,000 miles during its lifetime (the 5-digit odometer shows 19,679 but has rolled over once, we’re told).

Like the Chrysler above, the Mustang is black outside and red inside, and in the case of the Mustang, there is a radio, a stock AM/FM/cassette deck.

The Mustang has Ford’s 225-horsepower, 302cid V8 and 5-speed Borg Warner T-50 manual transmission

This pagoda-roofed Mercedes roadster is being offered for bidding after 47 years with its original owner. The roof can be removed and the car driven open to the environment.

The car reportedly has been driven only 109,075 miles in all those years, and its 158-horsepower, 2.8-liter inline 6-cylinder engine was overhauled in 2000. The engine’s output reaches the rear wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission that was overhauled at the same time as the engine. Engine and brakes reportedly were serviced recently as well.

The car has been repainted in its original Tunis Beige color and has a black, wood-trimmed and air-conditioned interior. The car’s original Becker Europa radio has been replaced with a modern but retro-looking unit.

To view these and other vehicles up for bidding, visit the AutoHunter website.

Auto Hunter Spotlight: 1949 Ford utility coupe

Today’s AutoHunter Spotlight is neither a Ford Ranchero nor a Chevy El Camino, but a Ford ute manufactured by Ford’s Australian branch but modified in the ensuing years.

We have a farmer’s wife from Gippsland, Victoria, to thank for these utility trucks. In need of a car that was both comfortable and tough, she sent a letter to the managing director of the Ford Motor Company of Australia in mid-1933 that read:

“My husband and I can’t afford a car and a truck but we need a car to go to church on Sunday and a truck to take the pigs to the market on Monday. Can you help?”

This 1949 Ford ute example that’s up for auction has been professionally restored and features refinished brightwork, replacement bed planks, Vintage Air HVAC system, modern stereo and Flowmaster exhaust system.

The Candy Cinnamon painted body wears chrome bumpers, a ‘bullet nose’ front grille and dual exhaust outlets.

Being Australian-born, this ute was originally a right-hand-drive, but the previous owner has converted it to a left-hand-drive.

The interior was refinished in cream vinyl with matching door panels and a body-colored dash.

Powering the truck is a General Motors 350cid V8 installed under prior ownership. It’s paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and a General Motors 10-bolt rear end.

This Ford UTE’s auction ends May 12 at 12:20 p.m. PDT.
