LFP Model 3 charging, Ioniq 5 finalist, EV for Uber: Today’s Car News

Some Tesla Model 3 owners are encouraged to charge to 100%. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 wows us as a finalist. And Arrival’s EV for Uber aims to be the taxi of the future. This and more, here at Green Car Reports.

Tesla is now delivering some Model 3 vehicles powered by lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, and while a bit slower and heavier they include a gift in usable range—with guidance that regular charges to 100% are fine, and even advised, for this version.

Arrival, the UK-based company aiming to make electric commercial vehicles in “microfactory” settings around the world—including South Carolina—has shown an EV especially designed for Uber and ride hailing. About the footprint of a VW Golf but aiming for maximum interior space, is it the future of taxis?

And on our way to naming Green Car Reports Best Car To Buy 2022 on January 3, we took a look at why the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the year’s best. While it clearly ushers in a new era for electric vehicle design and technology, will Hyundai sell enough of them to show Americans it’s serious about EVs?

Porsche Boxsters, Chrysler Airflow concept, Jeep Wangler donut doors: Today’s Car News

The Porsche Boxster celebrates its 25th birthday this year. When it arrived in 1996, it may have saved a floundering Porsche. We drove the original 1997 model, as well as a 2021 Boxster, and found that both convertibles feel tossable, but the latest Porsche’s suspension is more buttoned down. The original car’s simplicity is refreshing, but the modern car delivers a more visceral experience

Stellantis will debut the Chrysler Airflow concept at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. We expect the Airflow concept to preview Chrysler’s upcoming electrification push. The concept will be joined at the booth by the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, the latest Fiat 500, and even Citroën- and DS-badged vehicles not currently sold in the U.S.

Stellantis patented donut doors for the Jeep Wrangler with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The doors appear to be similar to those that appeared on the Ford Bronco during the SUV’s debut, but those doors haven’t made it to production. The patent images look identical to the donut doors fitted to the Wrangler Switchback concept shown in 2017. It’s unclear if the patented doors will see production.

You’ll find these stories and more in today’s car news, right here at Motor Authority.

Canoo aims for production in 2022 in Arkansas, shifts away from Netherlands plan

F-150 Lightning battery size, Rivian R1T, Canoo in Arkansas: Today’s Car News

The Rivian R1T is one of this year’s best. Canoo is shifting first production plans to Arkansas. And battery pack numbers for the F-150 Lightning have been confirmed. This and more, here at Green Car Reports.

Ford has confirmed battery sizes for the F-150 Lightning electric pickup, and to reach an estimated 300 miles in extended-range form it the battery pack won’t have to be as humongous as that of the GMC Hummer EV. And it might even rival the Rivian R1T for efficiency.

The U.S. EV startup Canoo has scrapped plans to make the first 1,000 of its quirky Lifestyle Vehicle in the Netherlands, and instead plans to start building them in Arkansas in 2022, followed by a move to its planned “Mega Micro” factory in Oklahoma later in 2023.

And as we work toward a big announcement of our Green Car Reports Best Car To Buy 2022, on January 3, we took a look at another important finalist. The Rivian R1T electric pickup doesn’t defy convention like the Tesla Cybertruck; it embraces a foundational format for Americans and levels it up in a way that truck owners will take note of. It’s going to bring about a lot of change.

2023 BMW M LMDh, 2023 Lotus Emira, 2023 Maserati MC20 convertible: Today’s Car News

BMW M has provided a teasing look at the design of its new LMDh sports prototype race car set to compete in the 2023 IMSA SportsCar Championship. It’s clear the new racer features elements inspired by the design of BMW’s V12 LMR, the car that secured the automaker’s first and only overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans back in 1999.

A new video shows the 2023 Lotus Emira take to the test track located at Lotus’ headquarters in Hethel, U.K. The Emira is the last Lotus to feature an internal-combustion engine, and we’ll see it in showrooms next spring.

Maserati will launch a convertible version of its MC20 flagship next year. It’s one of two new versions of the supercar coming down the line. The other is an electric version. The battery-powered  MC20 won’t be Maserati’s first electric vehicle, though. That honor will go to an electric version of the redesigned GranTurismo.

Model Y safety, tighter EPA standards, EV-to-EV charging: Today’s Car News

The EPA’s stricter final rule for fleet fuel economy and emissions is here, and we take a look at why some environmental groups still aren’t happy. The Model Y gets crash-tested. And is the potential to lend some charge from one EV to another as game-changing as it sounds? This and more, here at Green Car Reports.

Ford and Hyundai are among the first two automakers who will be offering the potential of EV-to-EV charging—in the F-150 Lightning and Ioniq 5, respectively. In both cases it’s part of a broader plan to make bi-directional charging capability part of a home-energy ecosystem.

With final EPA rulemaking announced on Monday, new U.S. vehicle fleet standards pick up with the 2023 model year and end up at a more stringent level for 2025 and 2026 than Obama-era standards had targeted. But with an estimate that automakers can satisfy the new standards with just 7% full hybrids and 17% EVs and plug-in hybrids combined, in 2026, is this enough?

The Tesla Model Y has earned a top-tier rating for safety from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Its IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, also earned by the Volkswagen ID.4 and Volvo XC40 Recharge, applies to models with the entirely camera-based Tesla Vision system introduced last April.

And over at Motor Authority: Vinfast, the automaker from Vietnam that has turned its focus to EVs and is in the process of establishing a U.S. headquarters, plans to show three more production-bound EVs at next month’s CES in Las Vegas.

2022 Ram 1500 TRX, Maserati Grecale, electric Porsche 718: Today’s Car News

Ram’s 1500 enters the 2022 model year with a trio of special editions, including one based on the 702-hp TRX. The TRX special edition is called the Ignition Edition, and it features a unique orange paint scheme that some may consider a rival to the Ford F-150 Raptor’s Code Orange when it comes to loudness.

Maserati has confirmed the date for the reveal of a new crossover to slot in below the Levante. The crossover is called the Grecale, and it’s essentially Maserati’s take on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

Fresh details on Porsche’s electric sports car plans have surfaced. Word on street suggests Porsche will launch an electric 718 Cayman around 2024. The car is expected to offer similar performance to the 911 but won’t replace it as Porsche believes there’s room for both electric and gas-powered sports cars in its lineup.

Toyota RAV4 Prime off-road, California hydrogen infrastructure, US EV ecosystem: Today’s Car News

California reveals a roadmap for hydrogen infrastructure. Battery recycling needs to be carried forward to be part of an EV ecosystem. And we take the Toyota RAV4 Prime off-road. This and more, here at Green Car Reports.

The Toyota RAV4 Prime is seemingly the Swiss Army knife of EVs, and it’s hard to come up with a scenario in which it doesn’t perform well. Last week we tested the RAV4 Prime off-road and discovered that many will appreciate using the tailpipe-emissions-free EV Mode out on the trail.

California released an annual update on the progress of hydrogen infrastructure in the state, and it sounds a bit more optimistic this year—projecting 100 retail hydrogen stations by the end of 2023. The 176 it predicts by 2026 will be enough to support about 250,000 fuel-cell vehicles. But it does point out how both the number of stations and the number of vehicles has trended below projections—for many, many years.

Redwood Materials, the company started by Tesla co-founder JB Straubel, is looking beyond just recycling; it’s reportedly planning to build a $1 billion factory to manufacture EV battery cathodes—essential to deliver on President Biden’s goals of more U.S.-built EVs and an American EV ecosystem.

Faster-charging Taycan, 500-mile Lucid Air, F-150 Lightning boost, GM EV1 hybrid: Today’s Car News

Ford is reportedly doubling F-150 Lightning production. Lucid is poised to break the 500-mile range ceiling. The Porsche Taycan gets faster charging and parks itself. And another GM EV1 sits neglected. This and more, here at Green Car Reports.

The 2022 Porsche Taycan gets a number of technology improvements, including a Turbo Charging Planner that will help speed up road-trip fast-charging stops, Android Auto compatibility, and a Remote Park Assist feature that’s a bit like Tesla Enhanced Summon.

The Lucid Air Dream Edition now comes in Performance or Range versions—with the latter one still expected to earn a range rating over 500 miles. With a real-world range test, Lucid showed that this is possible—or nearly so—at normal freeway speeds.

Ford has reportedly doubled its production targets for the F-150 Lightning electric pickup—to 80,000 annually by 2024. But even at that rate it would be roughly a tenth of total F-Series sales. With electric-truck reservations surging, will automakers—even Tesla, with its Cybertruck—be able to build enough?

And we brought you another story of an electric vehicle survivor—a rare GM EV1, of the sort now only seen in a few museums or special collections, that’s been hiding in plain sight on a Washington, D.C. street. But oh my, it’s been converted to a gasoline-sipping hybrid.

Nissan Leaf price cut, 40-mpg Maverick pickup supply, used EV tax credit: Today’s Car News

An EV tax credit could soon extend to used vehicles. The 40-mpg versions of the Maverick hybrid pickup might be hard to find. And the Leaf is now the lowest-priced EV in the U.S. market. This and more, here at Green Car Reports.

With a price cut of more than $4,000, the 2022 Nissan Leaf is shaping up to be the lowest-priced U.S.-market electric vehicle. Beyond that, it’s also making its debut with the lowest nationwide EV lease we’ve seen.

As we lament what wasn’t included in the “green” infrastructure bill making its way through Capitol Hill, we focused on a bright spot: a separate bill that would establish a $2,500 EV tax credit for used EVs. Is this an important step for spreading EV enthusiasm to those who can’t afford a new car?

And Ford has confirmed that the 40-mpg Ford Maverick hybrid pickup will be in tight supply for months, although the Escape Hybrid is now widely available, the Escape Plug-In Hybrid is coming this month, and a Bronco Sport Hybrid is all but explicitly confirmed.

And over at Motor Authority: Dodge has confirmed, through a presentation from its parent company, Stellantis, that it will be launching a plug-in hybrid model in 2022.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 debut, Nissan Ariya interest, Lexus EV and PHEV plan: Today’s Car News

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 makes its debut in U.S. form—although there’s no pricing quite yet. Lexus is about to embrace plug-in vehicles. And Nissan has reached 200,000—hand-raisers, that is, for the Ariya. This and more, here at Green Car Reports.

Yesterday marked the official U.S.-spec debut of the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. Although the EV’s limited initial availability gives us pause, it’s shaping up to be all that Hyundai promised and more in nearly every other respect—with up to 300 miles of range in its single-motor rear-wheel-drive version.

Green Car Reports got some up-close time with the Ioniq 5 for some additional photos and impressions, and meshing old and new has never looked this good.

And from bi-directional charging to bitmapped lighting and post-it notes, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is looking irresistible ahead of seat time. We explore some of the reasons why.

After years of marketing suggesting that plugging in a disadvantage, Lexus announced last week that it plans to launch its first mass-market plug-in hybrid model in the U.S. later this year, with a dedicated battery electric model to follow in 2022.

And Nissan last week included a surprise in its fiscal-year update for shareholders: that it has reached a combined 200,000 global hand-raisers for its Ariya electric SUV. The presentation also for the first time pointed to a fully electric kei-car project, and an upcoming third-generation version of its e-Power hybrid system—still missing from the U.S. market—by the middle of the decade.
