Jeep CJ Surge Concept Debuts As A SEMA Bound Electromod

The SEMA Show is home to petrolheads, but Mopar is using the event to explore electromods with the Jeep CJ Surge concept.

Starting with the powertrain, the concept features a scalable 400-volt, 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS) Electric Drive Module that resides in the engine bay and is mounted to the frame via custom motor mounts.

The electric motor is powered by a 50 kWh battery pack, which is mounted where the rear seats would normally reside. While this limits the fun to two people, the CJ is still a capable off-roader as the motor is paired to an automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels via a two-speed transfer case.

Mopar didn’t mention range or additional performance specifications, but noted the concept enabled “engineers to gain a better understanding of potential battery-electric vehicle parts kit applications.” In layman’s terms, the company is looking into electric crate motors.

While the powertrain is certainly the most interesting aspect of the CJ Surge concept, it’s not the only one as the model has been equipped with a chopped windshield, a 2-inch lift kit, and matte black 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires. The model also sports custom fender flares and Jeep Performance Parts Dana 44 crate axles.

Other highlights include Wrangler JK Rubicon bumpers, a Warn winch, and Surf Blue tow hooks. They’re joined by LED headlights, a retro-inspired EV badge, and a charging port behind the driver’s door. The model also has rock rails, skid plates, and an eye-catching Copper Canyon exterior with gloss black and Surf Blue accents.

Stepping inside, drivers will find custom seats with black and houndstooth upholstery as well as Surf Blue contrast stitching. They’re joined by a Wrangler JK center console, a rotary shifter, and new instrumentation including a battery information display. Last but not least, the Jeep CJ Surge concept has a custom roll cage and a special bikini top with blue accents.
